For several years Hani Coffee has served with friends from Texas to host an English camp at a high school a few hours outside of Kunming. The camp is a great opportunity to connect with students and teachers as well. Each class has between 50 to 60 students and lasts 45 minutes. During the week there is much joy, laughter and fun as we work together to encourage and build a learning foundation amongst the students.
At the end of the week, many of the students we have grown to know and love take us to meet friends and families in their home villages. It is a great time of connecting with families and getting to know better the culture and life from which these kids come.
This year we had the opportunity to work with 24 people from Texas. We are grateful that so many gave of their time and resources to come and work with young Hani students. Because there was such a large group this year, we were able to teach almost 200 classes and work with more than 1200 students. In addition, several of those that came have a background in education and were able to provide training for the schools English teachers. It was a good time of exchanging ideas, providing encouragement, and building relationships.
These camps are a part of an ongoing education program we are building and partnering with local school leadership. It’s all about using our gifts and talents to make a difference and to receive of the gifts and talents of these teachers and students to make a difference in our lives as well. This truly is a great time to be alive and be a part of something special!
