The camp is a great opportunity to connect with students and teachers as well. Each class has between 50 to 60 students and lasts 45 minutes. During the week there is much joy, laughter and fun as we work together to encourage and build a learning foundation amongst the students.

At the end of the week, many of the students we have grown to know and love take us to meet friends and families in their home villages. It is a great time of connecting with families and getting to know better the culture and life from which these kids come.

This year we had the opportunity to work with 24 people from Texas. We are grateful that so many gave of their time and resources to come and work with young Hani students. Because there was such a large group this year, we were able to teach almost 200 classes and work with more than 1200 students. In addition, several of those that came have a background in education and were able to provide training for the schools English teachers. It was a good time of exchanging ideas, providing encouragement, and building relationships.

These camps are a part of an ongoing education program we are building and partnering with local school leadership. It’s all about using our gifts and talents to make a difference and to receive of the gifts and talents of these teachers and students to make a difference in our lives as well. This truly is a great time to be alive and be a part of something special!

We hope you will continue to partner with us and enjoy the journey!

In a previous blog you read about the precious people who live in the “Golden Triangle”. You learned that the people who live in these beautiful tropical mountains, are impacted by human trafficking, drug trade, sex trade, child labor, abuse and slavery. It is a place where poverty, sexually transmitted disease and pain are commonplace. And to add to that, the area is suffering along with the rest of the province from a severe drought.

Some reports have shared this is a “once-in-a-century drought”. In this province, about 7 million acres have been affected with more than half of that destroyed by fire and up to 16 million people have not had access to adequate clean drinking water.

After hearing of these needs, volunteers from Texas joined with our local Hani Coffee team to go and serve the people of this area. We worked alongside families from a village tapping a freshwater spring, installing water supply pipe, tanks and teaching AIDS awareness and basic health care in local schools.

The team split into two groups, the first traveled into local schools and villages and trained several hundred students and adults in AIDS awareness and basic health care. The second group hiked up the mountain with the local farmers and tapped a freshwater spring and piped the water about 5 kilometers down to the villages.

And now because people like you were willing to partner with people from several cultures: hundreds of lives have been changed.

Look for more great opportunities to partner with Hani Coffee. We invite you to join the journey…

In March, a team of folks from all over the world will travel to a place known as the Golden Triangle. It is a place where 3 countries share borders, and the people of the area travel freely between countries. It is a fertile land where everything from coffee to mangoes are grown. It is also a place of extreme poverty. The farmers claw at the dirt to make enough money to keep the family fed. Many are uneducated and with such high poverty, many children begin farming alongside their parents when other children are headed to kindergarten. When all those factors come together, there are severe human tragedies.
Hidden by the beautiful tropical mountains and lush forests there, human trafficking, drug trade, sex trade, child labor, abuse and slavery are commonplace. In this place of poverty, AIDS, and pain, half of the team will be providing basic health, hygiene training, health care screening, and malnutrition supplements in villages and village schools. They will also be providing AIDS awareness training in a local vocational school to hundreds of high school aged children. While they are meeting those needs, the other half of the team will be partnering with a local village to provide them with clean drinking water. They will tap a natural spring almost 5 kilometers from the village and install pipe and water tanks. This is the first stage of partnering in this area as a new micro-enterprise is started up to grow and process high quality coffee. This is a great time for you to join the journey. Stay connected as we keep you updated…

We at Hani Coffee want to thank you all!

It has been a great year as we have begun this journey together. We have been able to do so much in the way of meeting needs among the Hani people and their communities. More children now have an opportunity at education; more villages now have access to clean water; and more remote communities continue to receive health and nutrition education! It truly has been an amazing year.We have begun moving Hani Coffee Co. into the next steps to becoming a business with a vision for making a difference. There are many things to share with you in the coming months, but for now, we want to focus on the holiday and all it brings.

Christmas is a time of giving and caring. It’s a time of loving and reflection. Our hope for you during this Christmas season is that you will have an opportunity to give of your life to others. Most likely someone who is in need of love and compassion will step into your path, take the time to give back! We are grateful for your part with us in making a difference around the world. We want to encourage you to make a difference next door or across the street as well!

Merry Christmas from all of us at Hani Coffee Co. both here in the U.S and also in East Asia!

Throughout the two-day event, we were able to not only serve great coffee but also share the heart, vision, and passion behind Hani Coffee Co.

Several individuals commented how our coffee is the best they have had in China. One lady even shared with us this story:

My son is an avid coffee drinker back in the states. I have sent him every single type of coffee available in China, and he says that Hani Coffee is the best. Keep up the good work guys.

Several of the other booth workers kept coming back to enjoy our coffee. We look forward to how these connections will flesh out in the future. I believe this weekend marks a major success and pivotal point for Hani Coffee Co. The best is yet to come!

Thanks to those who came out, bought coffee, asked about the Hani people, and showed your support. Make sure and tell your friends about us. Don’t forget: nothing says Merry Christmas like a bag of Hani Coffee!

This month found us in a very remote area of Southwest Yunnan. We went to a little village where we’ve been before, with the objective of repairing a water spring we had tapped a couple of years ago. We are trying to maximize the amount of drinkable water to the village so that there is enough water for them year around. It was a great time reuniting with the village and as always we feel at home with these old friends. We had several of the village men working with us, even though many villagers were busy harvesting rice and wheat crops.

It was great to reconnect with these folks and to see how our community development efforts have made such a difference. It is really their efforts that have made the biggest difference. They continue to make their village a better place for their children by encouraging them to be healthy and to get an education. The closest school is about 4 KM away, but the kids gladly make the daily hike.

Over the last three years we have helped to provide clean accessible drinking water, provide basic health care training and assist with development strategies for the village. Our goals for the near future are to continue giving nutritional training to young mothers and children. We also are hoping to begin some micro enterprise opportunities for the village in order to help raise their income to a more reasonable level.

Hello,

I’m writing to update you about my internship in south China. It’s been quite an adventure thus far. I’ve had several unique experiences with the different food, culture, and people. Most, if not all of them, have been very humorous experiences. I’m a bit strapped for time so I’ll save the details for when I get back.

I am already halfway finished with my trip, and I have taken water samples in 37 villages so far. From this point on, I’ll mainly be focused on designing future water infrastructure for a few of the villages in need. The area where I’m staying is extremely beautiful, and I hope to be able to show you some of the photos that I’ve taken along the way.

Overall, its been a great experience. The people are more than generous and extremely friendly. They are a people rich in culture and customs; however, there is a very large western influence finding its way into Chinese life. The food is a bit strange, in my opinion, but that was expected. My diet has been radically changed from the typical male college student’s diet, but I can usually find a few dishes that remind me of home, at least in some ways. I’ve even had several meals where I would’ve liked to get the recipe. One thing is for sure, the Chinese people do not lack food or appetite in my experience - they feed you ’til you’re full and then feed you more. Since I’ve been here, they have fed me 3 square meals a day and I’ve never left the table without being extremely full.

I’m having a great time, and my research is going well. I’m also anxious to get back to Texas and see family and friends. Thanks for all the prayers and support. I hope things are going well on the homefront. I’ll be talking with you soon.

-Calvin

Water to be sampled:

WOW! we have been working really hard on connecting with you all.

This first few months has been full of getting our product available to you and putting together a means of getting to know us, the Hani, and the vision of Hani Coffee Co.

I had no idea all of the work involved in putting together a website. I am so very thankful for the guys at Three Stream! What an amazing team they are, and I cannot imagine having made it through this process without them.

It has really stretched us and made us consider who we are and why we are doing this. It is no small task taking what is in your heart and mind and trying to articulate it into text.

Many of the images on our site come from an amazing young woman at Amy Coffey Photography. She is truly an artist that has the ability to fill you with emotion and a desire to connect with the people and places in her images.

So many have been a part of getting this project off the ground I cannot put them all in one post. I do, however, want to say thanks to all of you… our customers and friends. Without your concern and support, this would be just another coffee company.

Let’s begin this journey together and see where it takes us.
